Microsoft warns of Windows flaw affecting image rendering.

Microsoft warned today of a Windows vulnerability that could allow an attacker to take control of a computer if the user is logged on with administrative rights.

To be successful, an attacker would have to send an e-mail with an attached Microsoft Word or PowerPoint file containing a specially crafted thumbnail image and convince the recipient to open it, Microsoft said in its advisory, which also contains information on workarounds.

An attacker also could place the malicious image file on a network share and potential victims would have to browse to the location in Windows Explorer.

The flaw, which is in the Windows Graphics Rendering Engine, could allow an attacker to run arbitrary code in the security context of the logged-on user, meaning that accounts that are configured to have fewer user rights would be affected less.

The vulnerability affects Windows XP Service Pack 3, XP Professional x64 Edition Service Pack 2, Server 2003 Service Pack 2, Server 2003 x64 Edition Service Pack 2, Server 2003 with SP2 for Itanium-based systems, Vista Service Pack 1 and Service Pack 2, Vista x64 Edition Service Pack 1 and Service Pack 2, Server 2008 for 32-bit, 64-bit, and Itanium-based systems and Service Pack 2 for each.

Microsoft said it is not aware of attacks exploiting the vulnerability or of any impact on customers at this time. The company is working on a fix but did not indicate when it would be available.

Dear XP users: No IE9 for you (Listen up people, XP is dead!)

Here’s the deal. About two-thirds of PCs out there run Windows XP. Windows XP doesn’t support the Direct2D API that IE9 uses for hardware acceleration. No Direct2D support, no IE9.

But does it matter?

The answer is yes. XP isn’t being supported by microsoft for anything anymore – NO UPDATES!!… So, if you are still running XP and use the internet (which you obviously do because you’re on my website) you need to upgrade. Because you are now susceptible to hacker and virus attacks…

Apple quietly adds anti-malware in Snow Leopard update

In the latest update to Snow Leopard, Apple included software to protect Mac computers from a Trojan horse that has been distributed by attackers disguised as iPhoto, but which opens a back door on the machine, security firm Sophos said on Friday.

When Apple released OS X 10.6.4 on Tuesday, the company said it addressed certain compatibility issues with VPN connections and other things, but failed to mention anything about adding an anti-malware update.

What does this mean for you as an consumer?!?! Memory card exposed 3,000 phones to virus.

Vodafone has discovered that malware found on several HTC Magic phones it distributed came from the memory cards, which were shipped in about 3,000 HTC and other phones, according to a published report in April. Movil Zona reported that Vodafone said it was immediately sending new memory cards to people who bought phones using those cards.

After malware related to the Mariposa botnet was discovered on a second HTC Magic phone from Vodafone, a Vodafone spokesperson issued a statement saying it was a “local incident in Spain.”

In March Microsoft issued patches for seven potentially dangerous security flaws in the Microsoft Excel worksheet software and warned that hackers could launch remote code execution attacks if a Windows user opens a specially crafted Excel file.

The Excel update (MS10-17) affects all currently supported versions of Microsoft Office Excel. It also affects Office 2004 and Office 2008 for Mac, the Open XML File Format Converter for Mac, supported versions of Excel viewer and SharePoint 2007.

As with most Office vulnerabilities, a user would have to open a specially crafted file in order to be exploited, according to Microsoft’s security response team.
